BEARSKIN HEALTH & WELLNESS FACILITY
“The Area's Finest Total Wellness Facility"
Friday, September 11, 1998 was not only the beginning of the ninth annual Wyandotte Pow Wow; but also the Grand Opening of the Bearskin Healthcare & Wellness Center.
The centers namesake, Chief Leaford Bearskin, was elected to his post in 1983. It was over fourteen years ago when the Wyandotte Tribe and the Eastern Shawnee brought together their resources to open the first tribal clinic, the Bearskin Healthcare Center, which has since been open to the public and tribal employees. Now the clinic has been transformed into "The Area’s Finest Total Wellness Facility" . . . the Bearskin Healthcare & Wellness Center (BHWC).The Center was built on a site that is rich in history. It was the location of an Indian School, built in the late1800's which was later abandoned by the federal government in 1980. Several years later the federal government transferred ownership of the Seneca Indian School to the Wyandotte Tribe of Oklahoma for the purpose of economic development. The Bearskin Healthcare & Wellness Center continuously promotes wellness through fitness resources and educational programs. The Health Promotions Department features nutrition workshops, weight loss seminars, stop smoking clinics, special interest guest speakers, and much more. BHWC medical professionals specialize in patient care for the entire family. The facility features clinical laboratory services and state of the art x-ray technology. At Bearskin Fitness Center there should be something for everyone ranging from an indoor walking track to ongoing exercise classes and programs. The variety of equipment it offers is the best in its field.
